Ice Lifts Captains to Third Straight Win
April 18, 2017 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lake County Captains News Release
Eastlake, OH- Logan Ice provided both the clutch hit and the timely defense the Lake County Captains (6-5) needed on Monday night at Classic Park. In a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (6-5), Ice drove in the only run of the ballgame and was stellar behind the plate, helping the Captains to their third straight victory.
The ballgame remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. With starting pitcher Adrian Navas still on the mound for the Hot Rods, Li-Jen Chu and Emmanuel Tapia worked back-to-back two-out walks. Navas then delivered a pitch in the dirt that skipped past catcher Jonah Heim and moved the runners up to second and third with Ice at the dish. Ice came through with a sharp grounder through the right side that scored Chu with the first - and as it turned out, the only - run of the ballgame.
Ice also came up big defensively early in the game. In the first inning, Ice threw Hot Rods leadoff hitter Lucius Fox out trying to steal second. The very next inning, Bowling Green put runners on the corners with two outs. Josh Lowe, the runner at first base, took off for second and Ice pump faked to second, then whipped a quick throw to third. Ice's throw caught Adrian Rondon napping for the final out of the inning.
The Captains' defense was solid all night and before Ice made his inning-ending snap throw to end the second, the Lake County fielders turned in another exceptional play. With one out and a runner on first, Heim ripped a line drive to the gap in left-centerfield. Conner Capel retrieved the ball and fired a throw toward third, where Luke Wakamatsu was stationed as the cut-off man in the outfield grass. Wakamatsu caught Capel's throw, wheeled around and threw a strike to second base to get Heim trying to stretch a single into a double. Shortly thereafter, Ice's quick throw ended the threat.
A trio of Lake County pitchers combined for the first Captains shutout of the season. Micah Miniard started and lasted 4.1 innings, allowing five hits, walking three and striking out three to drop his ERA to 0.75 on the season. Ben Krauth relieved Miniard and the southpaw pitched 3.1 innings of shutout ball to earn his third win. Krauth (3-0) allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out five. Henry Martinez took care of the final four outs for his second save. Martinez allowed just one baserunner on a walk and struck out two.
Navas (1-2) took the loss for Bowling Green. The right-hander only surrendered three hits and struck out four men in six innings, but he also walked six batters.
The Captains have won three straight for the first time this year and will face Bowling Green on Tuesday in game two of the three-game series at Classic Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
