LumberKings Hold Off Late Wisconsin Rally

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

CLINTON, IA - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to get close, but the hole that they dug was too deep at Ashford University Field on Monday night against the Clinton LumberKings. Clinton built a 5-2 lead in the middle innings and held on for a 5-4 victory. Tucker Neuhaus and Jose Cuas both had two hits and two RBI for the Rattlers offense.

Wisconsin (5-6) went in front in the top of third inning. Neuhaus knocked in Ryan Aguilar with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

The LumberKings (5-6) came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third with a run of Matt Garza, who was making a rehabilitation start for the Timber Rattlers. Nick Thurman drew a leadoff walk and was at second with two outs. Bryson Brigman singled to center to send Thurman home with the tying run.

The Rattlers went back in front in the top of the fourth. Joantgel Segovia singled with one out. Cuas followed with a double to get Segovia home for the 2-1 advantage.

Kristian Brito started the Clinton half of the fourth inning with a home run to left and that tied the game. Jhombeyker Morales followed with a single. Rayder Ascanio was next and he doubled in Morales. Later in the inning, a wild pitch allowed Ascanio to score and the LumberKings were up 5-2.

Brito added to Clinton's lead in the fifth inning when the Rattlers defense booted an tailor-made double play ball to end the frame. Instead, Brito got to bat with runners at the corners and doubled to right to score Clinton's fifth run.

That was the final run charged to Garza in the game and it was an unearned run. He pitched 5-2/3 innings, allowed nine hits, walked two, and struck out eight. Garza was originally scheduled to pitch his rehab assignment for the Colorado Sky Sox in a Pacific Coast League game at Nashville tonight. However, a forecast of rain forced the Brewers to switch Garza to the Rattlers from Triple-A. The Sky Sox game was rained out.

Neuhaus brought the Rattlers to within two runs in the top of the eighth inning with an RBI.

Cuas made it a one-run game with a two-out solo home run in the top of the ninth inning off Marvin Gorgas. But, that was as close as Wisconsin would get and they would drop game one of the series 5-4.

Clinton starting pitcher Ljay Newsome allowed two runs and scattered seven hits while striking out six to earn the victory. He is now 2-1 in three starts this season.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at Ashford University Field. Victor Diaz (0-1, 2.25) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Clinton will counter with Danny Garcia (1-1, 0.00) as their starter. First pitch is scheduled for noon.

The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Potawatomi Hotel Casino Pregame Show at 11:40am. The broadcast is also available on TuneIn Radio and IHeartRadio.
