Kernels Win 5-0 Combined Shutout in Peoria

PEORIA, ILL. - Right-hander Tyler Beardsley tossed six shutout innings and earned a 5-0 win for the Cedar Rapids Kernels Tuesday at Dozer Park against the Peoria Chiefs. Relievers Andrew Vasquez and Tom Hackimer followed Beardsley with perfect pitching to complete a five-hit shutout and clinch a series victory within a three-game Kernels road trip.

Beardsley fired six strikeouts over six scoreless frames in a quality start for Cedar Rapids (7-5). He stranded multiple runners in each of his final two frames, protecting a two-run lead in the sixth inning by leaving Chiefs at the corners after an inning-ending groundout. He improved to 2-0 with the victory and became the first Kernel with multiple wins this season.

Vasquez and Hackimer combined to retire nine consecutive batters for a spotless night of relief. Peoria (5-6) went down in order against Vasquez in the bottom of the seventh, and Hackimer went 1-2-3 in the eighth and ninth innings. Vasquez earned his second hold while Hackimer picked up his first save of the year.

Mitchell Kranson broke through the scoreless deadlock during the sixth inning to put Cedar Rapids in front, 2-0. Batting with two outs and two runners aboard, Kranson lifted a two-run double to left field that brought in Jermaine Palacios and Jaylin Davis.

The Kernels also added runs in the eighth and ninth inning to stretch the advantage to 5-0. Davis produced an RBI single in the eighth, highlighting a season-best three-hit effort. During the top of the ninth, Travis Blankenhorn and Lewin Diaz registered back-to-back RBI singles.

Chiefs right-hander Bryan Dobzanski kept up with Beardsley over the first five innings of Tuesday's tilt, but Kranson's go-ahead double put Dobzanski in line for a loss. He dropped to 0-1 with the defeat.

The Kernels and Chiefs close this three-game series at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. Cedar Rapids right-hander Eduardo Del Rosario (1-0, 0.84) and Peoria right-hander Jordan Hicks (1-0, 0.00) are the probable pitchers for the finale.
