Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - In the first walk-off win of 2017, the Kane County Cougars (8-3) stayed atop the Western Division with a 2-1 win in 11 innings over the Beloit Snappers (4-7). After scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the frame, Beloit succumbed to heroic RBI hits from Cougar hitters Marcus Wilson and Jazz Chisholm in the bottom of the 11th inning.
With hits at a premium, it was the pitching that stole the headlines on this wet and rainy night. For the Cougars, right-hander Bo Takahashi (0-1) was brilliant in his second start this season. The Brazil native tossed five innings on just two hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts in the no-decision.
A lone moment in the third was the only point in which it appeared Beloit may be primed to score the game's first run in the regulatory nine frames. With two outs, returning Snapper Trace Loehr tripled to right field. Takahashi then walked the next batter Edwin Diaz before getting out of the jam on a lineout to third.
On the other side, Beloit's starting hurler, righty Michael Murray (0-0) was just as effective as his counterpart. With four scoreless innings, Murray left having surrendered just three hits on four strikeouts without a walk issued. The Cougars put runners on first and third in the fourth inning threatening to score against Murray, but the Florida Gulf Coast graduate forced Kyle Smith to lineout ending the frame.
The bullpen arms just as effective as the starters, forced the game into extra innings. In the away half of the 11th stanza, right-hander Austin Mason (1-1) allowed the Snappers to take a 1-0 lead. With one out, Diaz doubled setting up a sacrifice fly RBI two batters later for Nate Mondou.
In the face of a series opening loss, the Cougars tied up the game in the bottom of the 11th inning. Leading off against right-hander Xavier Altamirano (0-1), Luis Silverio collected just his fourth hit all season with a double. Silverio scored on a Marcus Wilson two-bagger, Wilson's league-leading 13th RBI of the season. Beloit then went to their bullpen bringing in left-hander Andrew Tomasovich (1-0).
Tomasovich allowed the walk-off run giving the Cougars a 2-1 win. In his first batter faced, Tomasovich hit Jason Morozowski and tossed a wild pitch putting two in scoring position for Chisholm. Picking up his second hit of the night, Chisholm stroked an RBI single through the left side for the walk-off triumph.
Right-hander Austin Mason earned the win, and Altamirano suffered his first defeat this season. The Cougars look to win the series Tuesday afternoon with a 12:00 p.m. first pitch against the Snappers. On the mound, right-hander Brandon Bailey (0-1, 9.00 ERA) takes the hill for Beloit facing an unannounced starting pitcher for the Cougars. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com. ###
