Brahmas' Scrappy Play Beats Scorpions
February 15, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Fort Worth Brahmas News Release
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas (February 15)- Texas had no love for New Mexico the day after Valentine's Day as the Brahmas defeated the Scorpions 4-1 at the NYTEX Sports Centre, extending their winning streak to five games.
Despite Texas' goaltender David Cacciola giving up the first goal against his former team, he was able to shake off the blurb and play outstanding, giving up only one of 29 shots.
Tyler Skworchinski was the first Brahmas player on the board with his fourteenth goal of the season from Brent MacSween and Craig Minard at the 8:17 mark in the first period. Texas' powerplay took advantage of the extra man when leading goal scorer, Anders Strome blazed a shot past Scorpions netminder and former Plano resident Andrew Martin.
As Texas went into the second, the physical play set the tone for the remainder of the game and the Brahmas were led by bruising forward Greg McConnell. Thirteen minutes in, Blair Manning found a hole in Martin's gear to put Texas up 3-1, his 500th CHL career point.
Texas and New Mexico continued to line up hits and deliver checks in the third, but it did not stop captain Manning from extending his milestone when he and Scott Sheppard set up Kevin Korol for his third goal of the season.
The Brahmas now move to 26-18-1 in the Northeast division. Tomorrow night Texas will face the Mississippi RiverKings and try to extend their winning streak as well as keep in the playoff hunt. Saturday's game is also Youth Jersey Night, where the first 1000 fans 12 and under will receive a free youth jersey courtesy of Ashley Furniture and HomeStore.
