Aikins Headed to the AHL

BOSSIER CITY, LA - For the second week in a row, a Mudbugs player has been called up to the American Hockey League. Bossier-Shreveport today announced that forward Justin Aikins has been recalled to the AHL's Rochester Americans, following last week's call-up of defenseman Dale Lupul.

Aikins has played in all 46 of Bossier-Shreveport's games so far this season, recording nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points with a +15 rating and 26 penalty minutes. The 6'0", 180 lb. forward is in his first year with the Mudbugs after spending his first two professional seasons in the East Coast Hockey League.

Last year as a member of the Phoenix Roadrunners, Aikins led the team in scoring with career highs of 27 goals and 57 points in 70 games. During the 05-06 season, Aikins was an ECHL All-Star as a member of the Long Beach Ice Dogs and finished the season with 52 points in 57 games. The Surrey, British Columbia native was the sixth round draft pick (173rd overall) of the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2001 National Hockey League Entry Draft. After his draft year, Aikins attended the University of New Hampshire , finishing his career with 103 points in 153 games. In his final year of junior hockey with the BCHL's Langley Hornets, Aikins scored 91 points in just 59 games.

Aikins could be in Rochester 's lineup tonight as the Americans host the Hershey Bears at 6:35 pm Central Standard Time. Rochester is also in action Saturday at Syracuse and Sunday at home against Hamilton . The Americans are the shared AHL affiliate of both the Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers.
