Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Brett Smith tied a franchise record with four goals as the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs dominated Odessa from start to finish in a 9-0 victory on Friday night at CenturyTel Center. Bossier-Shreveport scored five times in the first period, twice in the second and twice more in the third, tying another franchise record with a nine-goal margin of victory.
Matt York scored his first two goals as a Mudbug and added an assist, Dale Lupul had three assists and Ken Carroll earned the shutout in goal, extending the Mudbugs' CHL record with their 13th shutout win this season. Carroll made 21 saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season and league-record 25th of his CHL career.
The Mudbugs came out on fire in the first period with five goals, the most they've scored in a single period so far this year. Joe Ori started the scoring with his 19th of the season, cutting across the crease and backhanding the puck past Mike Gorman at 4:34. Later in the period on a delayed penalty, York found himself open in front of the net and scored his first goal as a Mudbug off of a great pass from Smith to make it 2-0. Three minutes later on an Odessa powerplay, Chris Brassard helped steal the puck and get it to Smith, who race in on a breakaway before backhanding it past Gorman for his fourth shorthanded goal of the season and a 3-0 Mudbugs lead. Smith then got his second of the night on the powerplay, tipping in a Lupul point shot. With just one second remaining in the period, York scored his second of the night on a beautiful wrister to the top shelf.
The onslaught continued in the second period, with Brett Smith getting another tip-in goal (this time deflecting in a Kevin Cooper shot) for the hat trick, the third of his Mudbugs career. Brassard stole the puck and scored another shorthanded goal to make it 7-0 Mudbugs after two periods.
Brett Smith's third period goal on a rebound made him the fifth player in Mudbugs history to score four goals in one game, matching the franchise mark. Elias Godoy added a breakaway goal later in the period to provide the final margin of 9-0.
Ken Carroll was forced to make a number of tough saves in the first period to keep the Jackalopes off the scoreboard, stopping 10 shots in the opening frame. Carroll finished with 21 saves overall in his 15th victory of the season, while Mike Gorman still made 45 saves despite giving up all nine goals in the contest. The Mudbugs outshot Odessa with a season-high 54 shots compared to the 21 for the Jackalopes. Bossier-Shreveport finished with three powerplay goals on seven opportunities, while Odessa was 0 for 6 on the powerplay.
The Mudbugs will now head to Austin for the first in a home-and-home set with the Ice Bats Saturday evening at the Chaparral Ice Center . Austin is coming off a 5-2 loss to Rio Grande Valley at home on Friday night that ended the Bats' three-game win streak. Opening faceoff on Saturday night is set for 7:38 pm, with pregame coverage beginning at 7:15 on 1130 AM KWKH. The teams will then come back to Bossier City for a Sunday game starting at 4:05 at CenturyTel Center.
