Boomers Shut out Normal to Take Series

NORMAL, Ill. - The West Division leading Schaumburg Boomers improved to a season best 11 games over the .500 mark by recording an 8-0 shutout of the Normal CornBelters in the rubber game of a three-game road series Friday night.
The Boomers (25-14) scored in six different innings and rode the arm of Tyler Watkins to the victory. Chad Mozingo opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-out single up the middle to plate Sean Mahley. Schaumburg scored five runs with two outs in the game. Nate Baumann plated three and provided breathing room with a two out two-run single in the third. Watkins (2-4) snapped a four decision losing streak by working eight shutout frames. Watkins allowed just seven hits while walking one and striking out four.
Eight different individuals recorded hits for the Boomers, who slugged a season high 16 in the win. Mike Valadez led the way with three hits. Mahley scored three runs. Jason Braun finished off the shutout with a perfect ninth.
Schaumburg opens a three game series at Boomers Stadium on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against the leaders of the East, the Traverse City Beach Bums. It's Cup of Joe Night at the first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a Travel Mug. RHP Robbie Penny (2-3, 4.73) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Brooks Belter (4-0, 2.92).
