Miners Sweep Slammers in Joliet

Joliet, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners defeated the Joliet Slammers 7-4 in six innings at Silver Cross Field. The game was called due to rain. Shawn Gilblair earned his fifth win of the season to improve to 5-2 on the season. The sweep over Joliet is the Miners second the sweep of the season (Schaumburg 6/1-6/3).

The Miners scored first in the bottom of the second inning off Slammers starter Wander Alvino as Jason Ganek hit a three run homerun to give the Miners a 3-0 lead. The Miners scored two more runs in top of the third inning off Alvino as Ken Gregory hit a RBI double and Jason Ganek came through with a two out RBI single to give the Miners a 5-0 lead.

The Slammers scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning off Miners starter Gilblair to make it a 5-2 game. The Slammers added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to bring the score within one 5-4. The Miners scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Sean Harrell hit a base hit and a RBI. Another run crossed due to a passed ball to give the Miners a 7-4 lead. The Miners would win the game 7-4 as the game was called due to rain in the top of the seventh inning.

The Miners would sweep the Slammers. The Miners improved to 24-15 on the season. The Miners now begin a three game series in Sauget, IL at GCS Ballpark as the Miners will take on the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled at 7:05 pm tomorrow night.
