Biblical Thunderstorm Ends Game in Seventh
June 29, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Joliet Slammers News Release
(Joliet, IL)- The Slammers and Southern Illinois Miners finished six innings of play before massive thunderstorms hit Joliet and the game was stopped. The score after six was 7-4, a complete game under Frontier League rules, giving Southern the series sweep.
The Miners jumped ahead on a three-run home run in the second from Jason Ganek, and piled on with another pair in the third off RBI base hits from Ken Gregory and Ganek, putting the score at 5-0.
Joliet proceeded to rally with four unanswered runs of their own. Kyle Maunus singled and later scored on a wild pitch, and Sean Estand came around on an RBI double by Hector Pellot. In the fourth, David Fox slapped a run-scoring double and Maunus later hit a sac fly bringing Fox around. Southern Illinois piled on with another two runs in the fifth making it 7-4.
And then the heavens opened up.
Members of the Slammers front office and grounds crew scrambled to cover the field in tarp, but epic winds nearly blew it off the entire field. A video highlight reel of the storm hitting Silver Cross Field is available at http://jolietslammers.com/tarpocalypse-2012
The Slammers now visit the Rockford Riverhawks for a three-gamer starting Saturday. Fans can listen live on AM 1340 WJOL with Aaron Morse and Greg Talbott calling the action.
