Gateway Grizzlies News Release
FLORENCE, KY - The Gateway Grizzlies scored five unanswered runs to come-from-behind and defeat the Florence Freedom 13-11 in ten innings Friday night at the Home of the Freedom. The win gave the Grizzlies their first series win since mid-June.
Gateway (19-20) picked up a season-high 16 hits while scoring a season-high 13 runs in their biggest comeback win of the season. The comeback win when trailing after eight innings was the Grizzlies first this season.
Trailing 11-8 after the eighth inning, the Grizzlies mounted a monster two-out rally in the ninth against Florence (22-17). With the Grizzlies down three, the bases clear and two outs, Chris McClendon extended the game on a single to right field. He advanced to second on defensive indifference and came around to score on a John Shelby RBI single. Landon Hernandez and Jon Myers walked before Justin Dunning tied the game with a two-run single to right field.
Gateway continued the momentum with two runs in the tenth. Antone DeJesus led off with a double, Jerod Yakubik drove him in on a single and McClendon brought home the Grizzlies 13th run on a sacrifice fly.
Jonathan Johnson, McClendon and Shelby had two hits, while Shelby drove in four runs. Rogelio Norris had three hits, including a solo home run. Yakubik paced Gateway with a 4-for-6 night and four RBI.
Phillip Reamy (3-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing two and a third innings while giving up just one earned run. Richard Barrett collected his seventh save of the season.
The Grizzlies begin game a six-game homestand with game one of a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners Saturday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.
