GREENVILLE, SC - Beau Vaughan turned in his best start of the season for Greenville on Tuesday night. However, the righthander's six shutout innings paled in comparison to the offensive show put on by the Bombers in a 16-1 victory over the Savannah Sandgnats at Municipal Stadium.
The Bombers, who had thrashed Savannah 22-4 on June 25th while setting a South Atlantic League record with 29 hits, managed 14 hits on Tuesday. Third baseman Andrew Pinckney went 4-for-5 with three RBI, while Chris Turner capped the night with a grand slam in the eighth inning. Claudio Arias and Dustin Kelly also homered for the Bombers, who have now won two straight games following a four-game slide.
Vaughan (2-4) earned his second win in his last three decisions. The former Arizona State standout continued his journey back from off-season arm trouble by allowing just three hits. He struck out eight Sandgnats without issuing a walk.
Greenville used a three-run second inning off Somer Gonzalez (3-4) to get things rolling. Patrick Perry's three-run double put the Bombers up early. Arias then smaked a line shot over the left field fence in the third inning for a three-run homer, his tenth of the season, to make it 6-0.
The Bombers cruised from their, upping their second-half record to 20-23.
The clubs meet in the third game of the four-game series on Wednesday afternoon at 12:05. Righthanders Jarrett Gardner (1-8) for Greenville and Collin Balester (7-5) for Savannah will pitch.
