Wasted opportunities spell end of three-game winning streak for Fish in 6-5 loss to Augusta

Columbus Rallies to Tie Game in the Ninth but Fish Fall in Bottom of the Ninth; Strand 14 Runners on Base in Loss

AUGUSTA, GA- Augusta 1B Julian Benavidez ripped a single through the left side of the infield to break a 5-5 tie in the ninth and give the GreenJackets a 6-5 win over the Catfish in the second game of a four-game series. Columbus left 14 runners on base and had a 4-0 lead as late as the fifth inning, and rallied in the ninth inning to tie the game at five. SS David Nicholson finished 4-5 with a two-run HR for the Catfish, the first of his professional career. RHP Brandon Weeden took the loss in relief for the Fish, surrendering a run in the bottom of the ninth inning on three walks and a single. The Fish end a three-game winning streak and fall to 22-20 in the second half (50-61 overall) while Augusta improves to 23-21 (62-48 overall). The win for Augusta is their third win in six games at Lake Olmstead Stadium in their final at-bat against the Fish.

Columbus led 2-0 after four tonight when 1B Dan Batz drove home a pair with a two-run single to right against Augusta starter RHP Osiris Matos. In the fifth, Nicholson hit a two-run shot over the left field wall to make it 4-0 Columbus and knocked Matos from the game. Nicholson's HR was his first after 421 career at-bats. RHP Chris Malone struck out five in the first three innings and escaped a jam in the fourth, but allowed three runs in the fifth inning (two earned) and Augusta rallied for two more in the sixth against RHP Brian Akin to take a 5-4 lead.

In the ninth trailing by a run, the Catfish rallied when Batz doubled to lead off the inning and was replaced by PR Steven Sapp. On a DH Justin Crist sac fly to right, Sapp scored to tie the game at five. In his second inning of work, Weeden walked two batters and a threw a wild pitch to put the winning run at third. While Weeden stuck out LF Mike Wagner for the second out, Benavidez's single capped the comeback with for Augusta and gave the GreenJackets a 6-5 win. With the series tied at one, tomorrow RHP Dimas Reina (0-2, 3.77 ERA) takes the hill for Columbus at 7:15 PM at Lake Olmstead Stadium in Augusta, GA for the third game of the series.
