AUGUSTA, GA, - Julian Benavidez singled to left with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, driving in Marcus Sanders with the winning run as the GreenJackets beat Columbus, 6-5 at Lake Olmstead Stadium on Tuesday. The win puts the GreenJackets back at .500 with a 22-22 record while Columbus falls to 22-20. Brian Stirm picked up the win in relief, his seventh this season. Brandon Weeden took the loss for the Catfish and falls to 2-9 this season.
After trailing 4-0 through 4 ½ innings, the GreenJackets too a 5-4 lead into the ninth. Dan Batz led off with a double to center that center fielder Johany Abreu just missed and nicked off his glove. Ryan Russ followed with a grounder to short that shortstop Marcus Sanders made a bad throw to first on allowing Russ to reach. After Ryan Carter popped out in foul territory to first, Justin Crist hit a sacrifice fly to right, driving in Batz and tying the score at 5. Kyle Haines led off the GreenJackets half of the ninth with a fly out. Marcus Sanders and Brian Horwitz both followed with walks. After a wild pitched advanced both runners a base, Carlos Sosa was intentionally walked. Mike Wagner struck out before Julian Benavidez came through. Benavidez went 2-5 tonight with a double and an RBI.
