Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (9-11) fell to the West Virginia Power (9-11), Single-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-3 on Thursday night. Lakewood's usually strong defense committed four errors on the night to help the Power to a victory.
The BueClaws tried to rally in the ninth but could not get the big hit in the inning. Trailing 5-3 with one out, Jesus Merchan and Greg Golson connected for back-to-back base hits to put the tying run on at first. After Josh Mader struck out for the second out of the inning, Mike Dzurilla drew a walk to load the bases up. Doug Gredvig then struck out looking on an inside fast ball to end the game.
Lakewood trailed 5-1 entering the eighth but plated two runs to cut the lead to 5-3. Dzurilla led off the inning with a base hit then Gredvig lined a two-run homer over the left field wall. It was Gredvig's ninth homer of the year and second over the past six games.
The Power broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth plating a run on one hit for a 2-1 lead. Nestor Corredor led off the inning with a base hit then moved up on Jason Jaramillo's throwing error. Corredor moved up to third after a walk to Alcides Escobar and sacrifice bunt from Hernan Iribarren. Ryan Braun then connected for an RBI sacrifice fly to center plating Corredor for a 2-1 lead.
West Virginia added two more runs in sixth for a 4-1 lead. Hasan Rasheed led off the inning with a double then came around to score on a two-out RBI base hit from Carlos Corporan. Corporan advanced all the way to third on right-fielder Ryan Frith's fielding error. On the play Frith came charging in for a chance to throw out Rasheed but let the ball slip under his glove. Corporan then scored on a wild pitch from Maximo De La Cruz for a 4-1 Power lead.
De La Cruz (4-8) took the loss allowing four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out one over 5 2/3 innings.
The Power added a run in the seventh when Ryan Braun connected for his first professional homer, a solo shot with one out in the inning off reliever Cory Dueit for a 5-1 lead.
The Power led 1-0 after the first inning but Lakewood tied it up in the second. Jaramillo led off the inning with a base hit then moved up to second on the walk to Frith. Sean Gamble moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt then Jaramillo came around to score on a wild pitch.
