Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, Ga. - Behind a solid start from GreenJackets starter Caleb Salankey and a three-run third, the GreenJackets beat Greensboro, 5-4 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Game 2 was quickly postponed after a heavy and continuous downpour in Augusta. Once again, the GreenJackets and Greensboro will make up a doubleheader, this time on Friday, starting at 6:15.
Greensboro starter Kurt Koehler was far from sharp. Koehler walked five batters through the first four innings and was not helped by his defense. In the third inning, Horwitz reached base from another error on Cleveland. Horwitz stole second during Klink's at bat and Klink walked making it first and second with none out. Julian Benavidez hit into a fielder choice when he grounded out to third. Jon Armitage walked, loading the bases for Steve Holm. Catcher Brad Davis allowed a passed ball, scoring Klink from third. Benavidez and Armitage advanced a base and were driven home on Steve Holm's line drive single to left, giving the GreenJackets a 4-2 lead. Brian Horwitz had a line drive double to left in the fifth, driving in Sosa, who singled to right with two outs in the inning, for a 5-2 lead.
Greensboro came back with a run in each the fifth and sixth. Brad Davis led the fifth off with a single to center that almost hit Salankey. Following a strike out by Cole Seifrig, Xavier Arroyo walked. After Cleveland flied out to right, J.T. Restko singled to left, driving in Davis. In the sixth inning, Brian Carroll doubled to left with one out off reliever Sean Martin. After Jai Miller flied out, Brad Davis doubled to center, driving in Carroll. Martin pitched a scoreless seventh, picking up his second save this year. Salankey allowed a first inning, two run homer to Brad McCann and escaped a vicious line drive off his right pitching shoulder in the third inning but settled down and struck out seven in five innings of work, picking up his team-leading eighth win.
The GreenJackets answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Alex Requena led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on Marcus Sanders ground out. After Carlos Sosa struck out, Grasshoppers shortstop Brian Cleveland booted an easy ball from Brian Horwitz, which scored Requena.
