Greenville Drive News Release
/GREENVILLE, SC - Columbus used a five-run first inning to gain a fifth straght win as the Catfish downed the Greenville Bombers, 6-3, Thursday at Municipal Stadium. While the Catfish gained the upper hand early, righthander Zach Hammes (3-4) shut down the Bombers by firing six shutout innings to gain the win.
The Bombers (9-10) have now lost three straight games and six of their last seven.
Righthander Beau Vaughan (0-2) faced nine batters in the first inning in suffering the defeat. The former Arizona State standout and third round draft pick yielded a pair of singles to open the ballgame. Travis Denker then lined a three-run homer to left field, his 18th of the season, to give Columbus a 3-0 lead before Vaughan had retired a batter
The Catfish added two more tallies in the first on an RBI single by Chris Westervelt and Ryan Russ' sacrifice fly. Lucas May widened the lead to 6-0 with a solo homer in the third inning.
Greenville did not get on the board until the eighth inning. Facing reliever Liam O'Flaherty, Claudio Arias blasted an opposite field home run to right-center to make it 6-1. The Bombers would cut the deficit to 6-3 on the strength of back-to-back, two-out RBI singles by Jeff Corsaletti and Jeff Natale to chase O'Flaherty.
Columbus then brought Brandon Weeden out of the bullpen to face the league's fourth leading hitter in John Otness. Weeden, making his first relief appearance of the year, induced Otness to hit a sharp ground ball towards the middle. Shortstop David Nicholson lunged for the ball behind the bag at second and made a backhand flip to second to get the force on Natale to end the threat.
Weeden then struck out the side in order in the ninth inning to notch his first save.
The clubs meet Friday at 7:05pm in the third game of the four-game series. Righthanders Gary Galvez (6-2) for Greenville and Jarod Plummer (0-0) for Columbus will pitch.
