
RiverDogs pound 14 hits; slam Crawdads 8-3

CHARLESTON, SC -- The Charleston RiverDogs pounded out 14 hits -- their second straight night of 14 or more hits -- and slammed the Hickory Crawdads, 8-3, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park to take sole possession of first place in the Southern Division second half standings.
Charleston has now collected 30 hits in the last two nights off Hickory pitching as they take the first two in the four-game series. The RiverDogs have matched their season's best total by going 22 games above the .500 mark, as they improved to 55-33 overall in 2005 with the win.
Charleston improves to 12-7 in the second half, and takes over first place in the south from Kannapolis which lost at Rome Thursday. The Crawdads slip to 11-8 and 33-52. Charleston also is now 45-10 in games in which they score four or more runs and are 40-11 when scoring first.
The first inning was huge for the RiverDogs as they scored four times, highlighted by third baseman Marcos Vechionacci's two-run single to center. Ben Jones doubled home another run and Edwar Gonzalez recorded a sacrifice fly.
Hickory responded with a run in the fourth on a Mike Carlin double to left, but Charleston retaliated with a run in their half of the inning on a Nick Walsh run-scoring single up the middle.
The RiverDogs put a pair of runs on the board in the fifth, increasing the lead to 7-1 when catcher Irwil Rojas drove home two runs with a single up the middle. Charleston increased that lead to 8-1 when Estee Harris doubled home Gonzalez in the seventh, who had singled.
Hickory added two runs in the eighth on a solo home run by Milver Reyes and a run-scoring double.
Abel Gomez evened his record to 1-1 with five strong innings as he permitted one run on three hits, walked three and sruck out four. Yoann Torrealba suffered the loss for Hickory, dropping his record to 2-3. In the process, Torrealba went 6.2 innings, allowed eight runs on 14 hits, walked one and struck out two.
Game Three of the four-game set is slated for Friday at 7:05 p.m. with Jeff Marquez (6-8), the reigning SAL Pitcher of the Week, going for Charleston and Kyle Pearson (1-9) pitching for Hickory.
