Catfish Tie a Season-High with Five-Game Winning Streak
GREENVILLE, SC-2B Travis Denker hit a three-run HR in a five-run first inning as the Catfish beat the Greenville Bombers 6-3 in Greenville, SC tonight for their fifth-straight win. RHP Zach Hammes earned his third win of the season with six shutout innings on the hill tonight, while RHP Brandon Weeden came out of the bullpen for the first time this season and picked up the save, striking out the side in the ninth inning. SS Lucas May had a double and a HR for the Catfish in the win, while SS David Nicholson ripped three hits and is 5-10 since his return from AA Jacksonville yesterday. The Catfish improve to 11-8 in the second-half (39-49 overall), while Greenville falls to 9-10 (44-43 overall).
Nicholson and RF Sergio Pedroza led off tonight's game with singles, and Denker's 18th HR of the season cleared the left-field wall to make it 3-0 before an out was recorded. Denker's HR was his 6th in his last 32 AB. C Chris Westervelt and DH Ryan Russ added RBI in the first inning to make it 5-0. May hit a solo HR in the sixth inning against Greenville starter RHP Beau Vaughan, giving Columbus their sixth run tonight. RHP Kyle Jackson kept Greenville in the game, limiting the Fish to two hits and no runs while striking out seven in five relief innings tonight for the Bombers.
In the eighth inning, Greenville struck for three runs and had the tying run at the plate, trailing 6-3 with two outs. Weeden came out of the bullpen and induced a fielders' choice groundout to end the eighth, and struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth for his first save. The Catfish win ensures a winning road trip. They will take on the Bombers tomorrow at 7:05 PM with RHP Jarod Plummer (0-0, 2.38 ERA) on the hill at Greenville Municipal Stadium.
