Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (41-20-10) picked up a tie in the standings after falling 5-4 in a shootout to the Columbia Inferno (38-21-12) at Germain Arena. The win for Columbia combined with the loss by South Carolina clinched the East Division title for the Inferno.
The Everblades let one slip away after holding a three-goal lead midway through the third period. Reggie Berg scored a pair of third period goals in the first 8:10 of the frame giving Florida a 4-1 lead. However the Inferno stormed back with three goals in the final 5:12 of the contest. D'Arcy McConvey cut the Everblades lead in half with a power play goal at 14:42. Matt Ulwelling made it a 4-3 game with an even strength tally at 16:53, and Sean Owens capped off the scoring tying the game at four with 47 seconds remaining.
Neither team scored in the overtime period, which included an Everblades power play, pushing the game to a shootout. In the shootout, both teams went scoreless for the first four rounds. In round five Brad Ralph put Columbia on the brink of gaining the extra point, but Lundbohm answered for Florida sliding his shot between the pads of Inferno net-minder Mike Minard. In round six however, Eric Boulton chipped a shot past Everblades goaltender Craig Kowalski to again put Columbia on the verge of victory. The Inferno locked up the win when Berg's attempt sailed over top of the net.
The high-tempo game started with the teams playing a scoreless first period. In the second period, the Everblades exploded for two goals in a ten second span midway through the stanza. David Lundbohm opened the scoring at 8:10, and Damian Surma gave Florida a 2-0 lead at 8:20 only to see Columbia battle right back to cut the lead in half when Trevor Demmans scored at 9:51.
Kowalski (13-6-6), who was playing in his first game since Jan. 29 picked up a tie after stopping 28 of 32 shots in regulation and overtime. Minard improved his record to 24-8-7 stopping 32 of 36 Florida shots. Florida tallied one power play goal in five opportunities, while Columbia finished the night 1-for-4 on the man-advantage.
The Everblades saw their shootout record fall to 6-6, and Columbia improved to 4-8.
