San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO – Max Birbraer notched a goal and an assist and goaltender Simon Lajeunesse stopped 28 of 30 shots, leading the San Diego Gulls to a 3-2 victory over the Victoria Salmon Kings Friday night at the ipayOne Center at the Sports Arena.

The Gulls (35-29-7) break their four-game winless streak, winning for the first time since a 3-2 triumph over the Gwinnett Gladiators on March 27. The Salmon Kings (14-52-5) have now lost four straight and seven of their last eight games, all of which have come on the road.

San Diego drew first blood 9:41 into the opening period on Grady Moore's fifth goal of the season. It happened on a fortunate bounce for the Gulls, as Moore's shot from the right wing circle ricocheted off Victoria defenseman Nathan Forster's skate and behind netminder Jamie McCaig.

Birbraer gave the Gulls a 2-0 lead 11:34 into the second period, converting on a give-and-go play with linemate Darren Clark. After the puck was chipped out to center ice, Birbraer rushed into the Salmon Kings zone two-on-one with Clark. He slipped a pass to Clark open in the slot, received a quick comeback feed and tapped it by a sliding McCaig for his 19th goal of the year.

Victoria had a golden opportunity to get back in the game when it was awarded a five-minute power play at the 13:44 mark of the second. That's when San Diego newcomer Yuri Moscevsky was accessed a major checking-from-behind penalty on Salmon Kings winger Derek Campbell, who immediately left the game with a leg injury.

On the ensuing power play, Chris Corrinet cashed in at 17:57, beating a screened Lajeunesse from the left point for his ninth marker.

The Gulls quickly answered at 18:46 of the second and made it a 3-1 game, as Wes Rypien knocked home his second goal of the season and his professional career. Rypien, who notched his first pro goal Wednesday, barreled to the net and grabbed Brett Draney's centering feed before punching it past McCaig. Birbraer also earned an assist on the play.

Adam Campbell scored Victoria's second power-play goal of the game 11:02 into the third period, cutting the deficit back to one. Jan Sochor took a pass from Mark Smith and dished it across the crease to an open Campbell, who nudged a backhander behind Lajeunesse. It was his third goal of the season.

The Salmon Kings had a couple of good scoring chances later in the period to draw even, but couldn't get anything else past Lajeunesse, who picked up his first win in a Gulls uniform.
