Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (5-3-0) picked up a big two points in the standings thanks to the heroics of Jonathan Lehun who scored the overtime game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over the Columbia Inferno (4-4-1) on Friday night at Germain Arena in front of a crowd of 6,861.
Lehun corralled a loose puck in the crease that Inferno goaltender Todd Ford was unable to cover and dunked it into the net with two minutes remaining in the overtime period. The play was created after Ford was not able to control a shot from the point by Everblades defenseman J.D. Forrest. Brad Zancanaro then jabbed at the loose puck that snuck under the left arm of Ford and into position for Lehun to notch the game-winner.
Throughout regulation, the teams traded goals back-and-forth. The Everblades opened the scoring midway through the first period when Mathieu Melanson notched his team-leading fifth goal of the season at 7:14 with the Everblades on a 5-on-3 power play. Defensemen David Cornacchia and Brandon Roach tallied the assists.
Columbia responded midway through the second period to tie the game at one when Daniel Sparre slipped a shot past Everblades net-minder Justin Peters at 7:35 of the frame, sending the teams into the third period tied at one. Early in the third period Ernie Hartlieb's shot from just inside the blue line gave the Everblades a 2-1 lead. Hartlieb's second goal of the season came 4:23 into the final period on assists by Jarret Lukin and Ryan Van Buskirk. The Inferno however responded just over three minutes later on a delayed penalty against the Everblades. With the extra attacker on the ice, Patrick Wellar's shot from the point sailed through traffic and past Peters at 7:40 to tie the score at two.
Peters bounced back after two straight losses to earn the win by stopping 25 of 27 shots, improving his record to 4-2-0. Ford earned a tie in the standings after allowing the three goals on 32 shots, which knocked his record to 3-1-1.
On the power play, the Everblades converted on one of their five chances, while the Inferno finished 0-for-6.
