Jackals Turn On The Power In Front Of Record Crowd 2-0

November 9, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, NY - In front of a record crowd of 4,187 at First Arena, the Elmira Jackals parlayed two power play goals and 27 saves from goaltender Joel Martin into a 2-0 victory over the Dayton Bombers Friday night.

Martin, who set a United Hockey League record with nine shutouts with the Kalamazoo K-Wings in 2005-06, notched his first whitewash in 42 ECHL appearances for his and the team's fourth win of the season.

Martin's best stop came early in the second period with red hot Chanse Fitzpatrick parked on the doorstep to the left of the Elmira net. Fitzpatrick snapped a shot off of a Yannick Tifu centering pass that appeared destined for the back of the net before Martin flashed the left leg pad to deny the former Jackal.

Fitzpatrick was riding the wave of an eight-goal ride over the last three games, including a five-goal game last Saturday's 5-1 Bombers win over Trenton.

That save typified the Dayton night as on the rare occasion the Jackals' defense broke down, Martin was there to slam the door shut. A two-on-one first period rush was denied as Martin's glove hand snagged a Brad Bonello wrister from the left circle.

And on several deflected shots, Martin appeared to have it all under control with quick covers on loose pucks.

In the midst of Elmira stopping a vaunted Dayton power play (25.6% entering the weekend) five time, the Jackals went to work on a couple of man advantages that provided all of the offense needed to bump the club's record to 4-3-0-1.

Newcomer Luke Fulghum was the last to touch a Chris Busby point drive to put the home team in front just 5:29 into the game. Kevin Ulanski tipped the drive off of Busby's stick before Fulghum helped it home past Bombers goalie Rejean Beauchemin (21 saves).

Fulghum, making his Jackals' debut after being acquired last week from Stockton, helped set up the final score of the night while on another power play.

Fulghum set a screen in front of Beauchemin as Andrei Plekhanov, reassigned earlier in the day by the Columbus Blue Jackets from Syracuse of the American Hockey League, let a drive sail from the center point.

The loose puck was picked up by Benoit Doucet, who slid home his second goal of the year at 5:10, to close out the scoring. With the goal, Doucet is now tied Pierre-Luc Faubert for the team lead in points with six.

Elmira held on in the late going after failing on a late power play as the Bombers went to the man-up for the final 1:50 and then pulled the goaltender for a 6-on-4 edge, but Martin and Jackals defense stood tall.

Friday night's sellout was the second of the season and broke the former all-time high set October 13th, 2006, when 4,126 filled First Arena in a UHL game against Kalamazoo.

The Jackals continue with their weekend home stand when they welcome the Bakersfield Condors tomorrow night at 7:35 p.m. and Sunday at 4:05 p.m. Great seats remain for both games and can be purchased on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, the Gray Street box office (open at 10 a.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday), and Ticketmaster charge-by-phone at 722-3711.
