Florida Everblades News Release
BOISE, ID - The Florida Everblades (5-5-0) lost 3-2 to the Idaho Steelheads (6-3-0) on Friday night at the Bank of America Centre in Boise, Idaho. The loss evened the three-game series between the two clubs who met for the 2004 Kelly Cup at one win apiece, with the rubber match coming tomorrow night.
Florida opened the scoring with rookie Chris Lee notching his first professional goal by breaking in on Steelheads goaltender Frank Doyle and slipping a shot between his pads and into the net for the 1-0 Florida lead at 11:12 of the opening period. The goal stood up until the early stages of the second period when David Cornaccia fired a shot past 'Blades net minder Craig Kowalski from the bottom of the right circle to tie the game at one at the 2:16 mark. Florida got a scare when forward Keith Anderson was injured by a hit along the boards four minutes into the second period. The injury occurred when Cornaccia left his skates to make the hit, which appeared to knock Anderson unconscious and led to him being taken off the ice on a stretcher. When play resumed, the Steelheads took the lead for good at the 6:34 mark when Scott Burt beat Kowalski on a breakaway to open a 2-1 Idaho lead.
The Steelheads opened a 3-1 lead at 8:53 of the final period by converting on a 5-on-3 power play chance, as Brett Draney collected his first goal of the season. The Everblades closed to within a goal late in the third period, when with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, Ryan Brindley slammed home a shot from the left side of the net with 10.7 seconds remaining in the game. Florida had a chance in the closing seconds to tie the game, but Brindley's shot from the right circle was blocked away.
Kowalski suffered the loss for the Everblades, allowing three goals on 34 Idaho shots, and saw his record fall to 2-3-0. Doyle picked up the win for Idaho stopping 18 of 20 Florida shots, which brought his record to 5-2-0. Florida finished the night 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Steelheads finished 1-for-4 on the man advantage.
Florida wraps up their six-game west coast swing on Saturday, November 13 when the team plays the last of three straight contests at Idaho at 9:05 p.m. EST. The next edition of the Everblades weekly coach's show "Blades Talk" will take place on Monday, November 15 at Stevie Tomato's Ft.
