Blades Fall Behind Early, Can't Catch Raiders

The Saskatoon Blades dropped their first game of 2019 seeing their 3-game winning streak come to an end in a 5-2 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders. Now at 24-12-5-0 on the season, the Blades will continue their busy weekend returning home to host the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday afternoon at 4:00pm at SaskTel Centre

HOW IT HAPPENED

Cole Fonstad (14) and Justin Nachbaur (10) scored 1:10 apart from each other giving the Raiders a 2-0 lead in the first period. From there the Blades were forced to play catch up.

Gary Haden (15) cut the lead in half in the second period but it was short-lived as Noah Gregor (25) answered back on a power play to make it 3-1 Prince Albert after 40 minutes.

Parker Kelly (18) made it 4-1 for the home side midway through the final frame but the Blades didn't give up. Dawson Davidson (8) scored a power play goal with 2:32 left on the clock to make it 4-2; Gary Haden and Max Gerlach picked up the assists. But exactly one minute later Noah Gregor (26) put the game out of reach with his second of the night to make it a 5-2 final for the Raiders.

Dorrin Luding made 27 saves in the loss while Ian Scott stopped 19/21 for Prince Albert. Saskatoon went 1/3 on the man advantage and 2/3 on the penalty kill.

NOTEWORTHY NUMBERS

Gary Haden had a goal and an assist to extend his point streak to 7 games with 2 goals and 7 assists.

Max Gerlach also extended his point streak to 7 games with an assist (6G-3A).

Dawson Davidson's power play goal-- his 5th of the season-- is the most by defenseman in the WHL.
