Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL -- Florida captain Ross Carlson led the Everblades to a 5-3 win over the South Carolina Stingrays on Saturday night in Germain Arena. Carlson recorded two goals, including the game winner, against the Stingrays in front of 6,592 in the final regular season meeting between the two clubs. The Everblades finished the regular season with a record of 7-5-1 against South Carolina and 4-3-0 at home.
After a scoreless first period that saw Florida out shoot South Carolina 10-5, the second period saw six goals between the two teams. Defenseman A.J. Thelen's recorded an assist on the first goal of the game. Thelen's blast from the point was tipped in by Shea Guthrie at the 8:21 mark. Guthrie's 17th tally of the season was the rookie's third goal in the last three games against South Carolina. The Stingrays wasted little time in leveling the contest when forward Jake Hauswirth (17) scored 20-seconds later on a goal that was assisted by forward Scott Bartlett and right wing Trevor Bruess. The Stingrays added a Matt Scherer goal six minutes later to take a 2-1 lead. Florida responded at the 16:03 mark of the period to even the contest at 2-2 as Ross Carlson tipped in a Benn Olson point shot. The tally was the captain's team-leading 22 goal of the season. Two minutes later, Florida center Colin Nicholson (9) gave the Everblades a one-goal advantage, recording an unassisted tally. Late in the third period, a scuffle in front of Florida's net resulted in a controversial shot by the Stingrays. After a short discussion by the referees, South Carolina defenseman Jason Fredericks (1) was credited his first goal of the season. The second period ended deadlocked 3-3.
The Everblades dominated the Stingrays in the third period of play out shooting them 17-7 and out chancing them five to one. With 2:26 remaining the 'Blades got the go-ahead goal on a redirected shot off the stick of Ernie Hartlieb. Ross Carlson (23) picked up his second goal of the game on the tip in which was also the game winner. Hartlieb and Milan Gajic recorded helpers. The same pair would also assist on the final tally of the game scored on the power play with Brandon Buck (15).
The Everblades take to the road this week for the final games in Charlotte and Gwinnett. The 'Blades and Checkers meet on Tuesday, March 23 and Thursday, March 25 in Time Warner Cable Arena before finishing the road trip in Gwinnett on Saturday and Sunday in the Arena at Gwinnett Center.
