Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Bakersfield, CA - In a Saturday night matchup the Victoria Salmon Kings and Bakersfield Condors met in the finale of a two-game set at the Rabobank Arena. Victoria's Glenn Fisher got the start in net while Bakersfield gave the nod to Timo Pielmeier.
Bakersfield scored the lone goal of the opening period at the 6:30 mark. Gino Guyer moved the puck into the offensive zone down the right wing, cut into the slot and released a wrist shot that beat Fisher low blocker side for his 13th goal of the season. The Salmon Kings' goaltender made 16 first-period saves to keep Victoria within one goal heading into the second frame.
Victoria knotted the game at 1-1 at the 14:43 mark of the middle period on Lance Morrison's third goal of the year. After a goalmouth scramble Morrison picked up the loose puck from the left side of the net and lifted a backhand shot up and over Pielmeier. The goalies were kept busy throughout the period as Pielmeier and Fisher made 11 and 16 saves respectively. Both teams skated into the intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
The Condors retook the lead at the 3:54 mark of the third period off Jordan Collins' first professional goal. The Condors' forward controlled the puck along the right goal line and fired a shot on Fisher that snuck under the goaltender's pads and into the net. A goalmouth scramble resulted in Bakersfield taking a 3-1 advantage at 6:10. Stephane Goulet found a loose puck at the right side of the net and roofed home his 25th goal of the campaign over a diving Fisher. The Salmon Kings pulled back within one at 8:46 on Matt Siddall's 18th goal of the year. The Victoria forward released a shot from just inside the right blue-line that beat Pielmeier's glove into the net. Victoria would pull the goalie late in the game but were unable to net the equalizer. Condors 3 Salmon Kings 2.
The Salmon Kings finish their six-game road trip next week in Idaho for three games versus the Steelheads on March 24th, March 26th, and March 27th. Victoria returns home to host the Utah Grizzlies on Wednesday, March 31st, Friday, April 2nd, and Saturday, April 3rd for the final series of the 2009-10 regular season. Puck drop for all three games is at 7:05 p.m. at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. For tickets, call 250-220-7777 or visit www.selectyourtickets.com.
