West Virginia Black Bears News Release
The West Virginia Black Bears banged out 13 hits to defeat the Aberdeen IronBirds 4-1 on Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. With the win, West Virginia now improves its record to 26-28 while the IronBirds fall to 26-27 overall this season.
The Black Bears struck first on Friday night in the second inning. SS Logan Ratledge got things going for West Virginia by earning a one-out walk and then advancing to second on a wild pitch. Ratledge then advanced to third on a ground out and then RF Alexis Bastardo delivered an RBI single to left field to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
West Virginia was scoreless for two innings, but added on a couple insurance runs in the fifth. 3B Mitchell Tolman led the inning off with a deep double to center field which was followed by a single to left by LF Ryan Nagle. With runners at first and third, Tolman hustled home on a passed ball to make the score 2-0. DH Albert Baur then crushed a single to center, scoring Nagle from third to give the Black Bears a 3-0 advantage.
The IronBirds scored a run in the top of the sixth on a ground ball to short but that was all the offense they would get. West Virginia added on another run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to center from Nagle, scoring 1B Chris Harvey.
The pitching staff had a solid performance beginning with SP Brandon Waddell. In his home debut, the University of Virginia product pitched 4.0 innings, allowing only one hit with three strikeouts. RP Sean Keselica was first out of the pen and tossed 2.0 innings, allowing one run and one hit to earn the win (2-2) RP Cesilio Pimentel pitched the final 3.0 innings of the game, allowing no runs and striking out three to earn his team-leading fourth save.
At the plate, Baur and Bastardo finished going 3-for-4, each with an RBI. Tolman, C Daniel Arribas and 2B Kevin Kramer each recorded two hits apiece as well in Friday night's victory.
The Black Bears will now travel to State College to face the Spikes, beginning tomorrow, August 15, in a two-game series before the All-Star Break.
