August 14, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Brooklyn Cyclones News Release
BROOKLYN, NY - The Cyclones have now dropped a club-record six straight home games with a 9-0 loss to the State College Spikes at MCU Park on Friday night. It's the third time Brooklyn has been swept this season but the first at home. The loss drops the Cyclones to 25-28 and 3-11 in the month of August. The Cyclone bats continue to drag, with the offense recording just four hits in being shut out for the second night in a row and the sixth time this season. Over the last two games, Brooklyn mustered just nine hits total and was outscored 18-6 in the series.
State College grabbed an early lead on Brooklyn and RHP Eddie Villasmil in the first. A leadoff double from Craig Aikin was followed by two outs before a passed ball charged to catcher Bandon Brosher allowed the game's first run to score.
Villasmil, making his second appearance for the Cyclones, got through the second and third unscathed before allowing an insurance run in the fourth. Thomas Spitz singled to start the frame before stealing second base and reaching third on a wild pitch. A two-out single from Cole Lankford drove in Spitz, giving State College a 2-0 lead.
Villasmil (0-1, 1.93) would take the loss after allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, while walking two and striking out one over five innings.
For the second time in this series, the Cyclones offense wasn't much to speak of. After a David Thompson single in the first inning, Brooklyn recorded just one hit over the next four innings, with State College starter Jacob Evans facing the minimum over that span. A leadoff single from Alfredo Reyes in the sixth ended the hitless stretch and extended Reyes' hitting streak to six games but Brooklyn wasn't able to get a runner across home plate. Evans (2-1) would get the win after tossing six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and walking two while striking out five.
RHP Brandon Welch came on in the sixth to make his first appearance of the season for the Cyclones. After a single, a stolen base and a walk, the Spikes had runners on first and second. With two outs, Ronnierd Garcia hit a double to right field, scoring both runs and extending the State College lead to 4-0.
State College wasn't done and would continue to tack on insurance runs. In the seventh, RHP Jose Celas took over for Brooklyn. An infield hit sandwiched between two walks loaded the bases with one out before a two-run double from Acevedo made it a 6-0 game. Another walk loaded the bases once again before Celas was removed for RHP Ty Williams, who forced in a run with a walk of his own. A wild pitch followed, making it an 8-0 game before Williams got out of the inning with all four runs scored being charged to Celas.
Williams stayed on in the eighth and allowed three more walks before a bases-loaded single scored another run to make it a 9-0 game. He was removed for LHP Ruben Reyes, who finished the inning allowing no runs despite the jam, before position player-turned relief pitcher Pedro Perez made his third appearance of the season and threw a scoreless ninth.
State College reliever Steven De La Cruz came on to throw a scoreless seventh and eighth innings which included four strikeouts. Brooklyn did muster two hits against the right hander, bringing the grand total to four on the evening but no further offense could be created. RHP Kender Villegas came on for the Spikes in the ninth to finish off the game and complete the sweep.
The Cyclones take a trip north to face the Hudson Valley Renegades at Duchess Stadium on Saturday in the first of a two game set before the All-Star Break. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM as RHP Gaby Almonte (6-3, 3.22) takes the hill for Brooklyn. The Cyclones return home to MCU Park on Sunday, August 16th to take on the Renegades in the second game of the home-and-home series. RHP Andrew Church (1-3, 5.52) starts for Brooklyn in a 5:05 PM start. Tickets can be purchased at the MCU Park Box Office, by calling (718)507-TIXX or right here at BrooklynCyclones.com.
