Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
Niles, OH - The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Mahoning Valley Scrappers by a score of 7-0 on Friday evening at Eastwood Field. With the victory, the Renegades saw their record improve to 25-28 while Mahoning Valley falls to 23-29.
Hudson Valley saw center fielder Angel Moreno and right fielder Manny Sanchez each reach base with a single and third baseman Alex Schmidt walk to load the bases in the top of the first inning. With two outs, designated hitter Hector Montes drove in a run on a single to give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
The Renegades scored three more runs in the top of the third inning as with the bases loaded, Montes brought two more runs home on a single. First baseman Nic Wilson drove in a run later in the inning on a RBI sacrifice fly to extend the Hudson Valley lead to 4-0.
That was all the support that Hudson Valley's starting pitcher Cameron Varga (2-4) would need as he tossed six scoreless innings while scattering four hits and struck out four batters in the win.
In the top of the seventh inning, Moreno hit a solo home run to give the Renegades a 5-0 advantage. This was the second straight game where the Hudson Valley center fielder hit a solo home run, making Moreno the second Renegades player this season to hit a home run in consecutive games played as Hector Montes achieved the feat against West Virginia on June 28th and 29th.
Shortstop Jake Cronenworth chipped in with a RBI sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth inning to give Hudson Valley a 6-0 lead. And with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Montes drove in left fielder Joe McCarthy, who led off the inning with a single, on a RBI single to add to Hudson Valley's advantage. Montes finished the evening going three-for-five with four RBI.
The loss went to Mahoning Valley's Kieran Lovegrove (1-5) as he allowed four runs and three earned runs in three innings pitched.
