Auburn Doubledays News Release
TROY, NY - The Doubledays defeated the ValleyCats 7-5 in game that was close until the finish. A day after a tough 2-0 loss where the offense was quiet, the bats exploded on Thursday.
The Doubledays bats broke out in the very first inning. After Victor Robles grounded out to short, Max Schrock and Kelvin Gutierrez both singled to put runners on first and second with one out. The duo then moved over to second and third on a wild pitch before Rhett Wiseman walked to load the bases. After the walk, Diomedes Eusebio hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Schrock and put the 'Days up 1-0.
But it didn't take very long for the ValleyCats to respond. After a 6-4-3 double play cleared the bases and made it two outs in the bottom of the first, Aaron Mizell launched his first professional homer to left to tie the game up at 1-1.
Two innings later in the third, the Doubledays responded. Schrock led off with a single to right and moved all the way to third on a double by Gutierrez. Schrock then scored the second run on an RBI ground out to second and Auburn took a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Tri-City tied it up. Bobby Wernes singled up the middle to lead off the frame. He then moved to second on a balk and third on a passed ball. The infielder later scored a sacrifice fly off the bat of Anthony Hermelyn to tie it up at 2-2.
After a scoreless fifth and sixth, the Doubledays got back on the board in the seventh. Schrock doubled with one out and moved over to third on an E6 off the bat of Gutierrez. Wiseman then knocked in Schrock and simultaneously moved Gutierrez to second. With Eusebio at the dish, Gutierrez advanced to third and Wiseman to second on a wild pitch. Eusebio then brought it Gutierrez with another sacrifice fly to give the Doubledays a 4-2 lead.
An inning later in the eighth, the 'Days added another pair. Jorge Tillero singled and moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. After Melvin Rodriguez struck out, Darryl Florentino and Robles drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Schrock then flew out to left before Gutierrez brought it Tillero and Florentino on a single to center to give the Doubledays a 6-2 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Cats rallied. Mizell doubled and Wernes walked to lead off the inning. The duo then moved two third and second respectively when Wiseman's throw to third on a fly out to right sailed wide of third and recorded as an error. Mizell then scored on a ground out before Hermelyn brought in Wernes on a single to center. Brooks Marlow then knocked in Hermelyn with a double to center to put the score at 6-5.
The Doubledays did add an insurance run in the top of the ninth. Ian Sagdal reached on a long error on the left infielder that allowed him to move to second. He then came around to score on a double to left by Melvin Rodriguez that was misplayed by the left fielder.
In the bottom of the ninth, Kevin Mooney gave up a single and two walks before shutting the door and recording his first save of his professional career.
