Yankees Fall Victim to Sweep with 7-6 Loss

August 14, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Staten Island Yankees News Release

After dropping the first two games of the series to the Williamsport Crosscutters (35-19), the Staten Island Yankees (26-26) couldn't fight off the sweep, falling 7-6 in a battle of first place teams.

The Crosscutters threw the first punch of the game in the top of the second inning. Jesus Posso singled to right field, followed by a double from Jan Hernandez to put both runners in scoring position. Austin Bossart was next up, reaching on a fielding error by Thairo Estrada to allow Posso to cross the plate. Luis Espiritu, Jr. then brought home Hernandez with a sacrifice fly to right field for a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees answered right back in the bottom half of the frame. Kevin Alexander and Brandon Wagner collected back-to-back singles then scored on a towering fly ball to left field by Drew Bridges that was misplayed by Williamsport's Venn Biter, allowing two runs to cross the plate to tie the game.

Staten Island went on to take the lead in the fourth inning. Junior Valera reached on an infield single then Brandon Wagner homered for the third time this season, putting the Baby Bombers up by two runs.

Pitching held strong for Staten Island until the eighth inning with Matt Borens (L, 1-3) on the mound. Carlos Duran doubled to left field to kick off the inning then Biter drew a walk. With two runners on, Josh Tobias smashed his third homer of the season to put the Crosscutters up by a run. After walking Jose Pujols, Josh Roeder replaced Borens on the mound and promptly gave up a towering home run to Posso, his sixth homer of the season for a three run lead.

Robert Tasin entered the game in the ninth to close it out for the Crosscutters, but the Baby Bombers wouldn't go down without a fight. Tasin struck out the first two batters of the inning before allowing a double to Alvaro Noriega, his first hit as a Staten Island Yankee. Zack Zehner then singled to left before Estrada followed with a single of his own to score Noriega. Kevin Cornelius continued the two-out rally with a single to center field, bringing Zehner across the plate. But that was all the Yankees had in them in the ninth, dropping the contest, 7-6.

Staten Island finishes the homestand with a two game set against the Vermont Lake Monsters on Saturday and Sunday before getting a few days off for the All-Star break. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
