Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

BURLINGTON, VT - The Connecticut Tigers (25-26) fell in the final game of the three game series to the Vermont Lake Monsters (25-28) by a score of 4-3. Chris Iriart hit a walk off three-run home run to win the game for the Lake Monsters.

Connecticut took a lead in the sixth inning with two runs off of two different Vermont relief pitchers. With Heath Bowers on the mound leftfielder Jacob Kapstein (1-3, R) started the inning with a single and stole second. He then scored on an error by the second basemen on a ball hit by designated hitter Cam Gibson. On the play Gibson advanced to second and scored on base hit by first basemen Will Allen (1-3, RBI, BB) off of Derek Beasly to make it 2-0.

The Tigers added a run in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Keaton Jones pushing the lead to 3-0. However, with Jake Shull (0-3) on the mound in the ninth things unraveled.

With one out designated hitter Steven Pallares walked and moved to second on a single by centerfielder Seth Brown. The next batter flew out so it still looked like the Tigers were in charge as there were two outs in the inning. But catcher Nick Collins singled in a run to make it 3-1. The next batter was Chris Iriart (2-4, 3 RBI) and he launched a three-run walk off home run to right field to win the game. For Shull it was his first blown save in six opportunities.

The comeback ruined what was a sensational performance by the Connecticut starter Sandy Baez. After allowing a hit to shortstop Trace Loehr to start the game Baez was brilliant as he retired the next 18 batters he faced. It was by far the best outing of the season for Baez who threw six innings allowing just that single hit and striking out four. At one point Connecticut pitching had retired 22 straight batters.

The win on the night goes to Darwin Frias (1-0) who allowed a run in the ninth on one hit. Evan Manarino started the game for Vermont and pitched three shut out innings giving up just two hits and walking two.

Connecticut will play the first game of a two game series at home against Aberdeen on Saturday night. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Connecticut Tigers are the New York-Penn League affiliate of the Detroit Tigers and play a 76 game schedule that runs from mid June through early September. 2015 season tickets, group tickets, mini plans, individual game tickets, and team merchandise are now on sale! The front office and ticket office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
