Lowell Spinners News Release

BATAVIA, NY - Austin Glorius struck out eight in five innings, while Enfember Martinez continued his recent streak of impressive relief appearances, as the two combined to twirl a two-hit shutout for the Lowell Spinners in Batavia, 3-0, on Friday night.

The win, combined with Tri-City's game being rained out, moved the Spinners to just a half-game out of first place in the Stedler Division with 22 games to go. It also closed a six-game road trip in which the team was 4-2, gaining a game and a half on the ValleyCats in the standings.

Lowell (29-25) put together a two-out rally to take the lead in the fourth as Kyri Washington walked and Mitch Gunsolus hit a deep fly ball to centerfield that landed for a double, scoring Washington from first.

The Spinners added two important insurance runs in the seventh as Tate Matheny led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and scored on a single by Sean Coyle. Coyle moved up to second on an error and after an Andrew Benintendi walk, a groundball by Victor Acosta was misplayed, leading to Coyle crossing the plate with the team's third run.

Glorius (1-1, 2.79) was dominant in his second start for the Spinners, striking out eight in five innings. Although he only had one 1-2-3 inning, Glorius allowed just a single hit, walked two and hit a batter, lowering his earned run average by three runs in the process. Martinez, who retired 11 in-a-row at one point to pick up his first save of the season, has been white-hot, allowing just two earned runs in his last 14 innings.

Coyle, a member of the Pawtucket Red Sox on a minor league rehabilitation assignment with the Spinners, had two hits and an RBI while Benintendi extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-hit night. Over the course of the streak, Benintendi has raised his average from .256 to .293.

The Spinners return home tomorrow to begin a brief two-game set with the ValleyCats before the All-Star break. Rick Porcello, a member of the Boston Red Sox, will make a Major League Rehab appearance and get the start on "Win a Royal Caribbean Cruise Night", sponsored by Garavanian Travel and Royal Caribbean. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
