
Black Bears Fall to Spikes 7-6 in 10 Innings

Despite tying the game in the ninth, the West Virginia Black Bears fell to the State College Spikes 7-6 in the series opener at Monongalia County Ballpark on Thursday night. With the loss, the Black Bears now have an overall record of 23-23 while State College improves to 22-23 this season.
After State College took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the first, the Black Bears answered right back in the bottom half. SS Kevin Newman and 3B Mitchell Tolman led the inning off with back-to-back singles before advancing on a ground ball. LF Ryan Nagle then delivered a sacrifice fly, scoring Newman from third to tie the game at 1-1. West Virginia got another run in the second when CF Casey Hughston doubled to center field and then later scored on an RBI single by C Deybi Garcia to tie the game 2-2.
State College took the lead right back in the third inning on a two-run homer to left field by Orlando Olivera. The teams played a scoreless inning before the Spikes added on to their lead in the fifth. State College drove in three runs on four hits in the top half of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. The Black Bears cut the lead in the seventh inning on a ground ball to second, scoring 2B Logan Ratledge from third followed by a wild pitch brining home Newman to cut the State College lead to 6-4.
Tolman got things started in the ninth with a one-out triple deep in the gap. Hill then stepped the plate and came through with an RBI single up the middle to put the Black Bears only down by one. Later in the inning, DH Maximo Rivera lined a single off of the pitcher's foot, bringing home Hill to tie the game 6-6 and force a tenth inning.
State College went up in the top of the tenth on an RBI double by Thomas Spitz and the Black Bears were unable to answer back in the bottom half to end the game.
SP Bret Helton tossed 4.0 innings for the Black Bears, allowing six runs (four earned) and 11 hits. RP Eric Dorsch pitched 3.0 scoreless innings which was followed by 2.0 innings of relief from RP Edgar Santana, where he allowed two runs. RP Sean Keselica pitched the tenth inning for West Virginia, allowing the go-ahead run to get saddled with the loss (0-2).
The Black Bears and Spikes will continue the series Friday, August 7 at 7:05 p.m. at Monongalia County Ballpark where it will be Fireworks Night, sponsored by Verizon.
