Renegades Hang On Late In Win Over Staten Island

Staten Island, NY (8/6/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Staten Island Yankees on Thursday evening by a score of 4-3 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. With the victory, the Renegades improved their record to 22-23 while the Yankees fell to 23-21.

The Renegades struck for two runs in the top of the first inning as second baseman Jake Cronenworth singled to lead off the game and shortstop Michael Russell walked. Right fielder Cade Gotta brought home Cronenworth with a RBI single and later in the inning third baseman Hector Montes drove in Russell on a RBI sac fly.

Hudson Valley extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second inning as left fielder Jose Paez walked to lead off the inning, stole second base and scored on a RBI single from Cronenworth. The Renegades second baseman later scored in the inning on a RBI sacrifice fly from Gotta.

The Yankees cut the Renegades lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning as third baseman Drew Bridges brought home right fielder Jhalen Jackson on a RBI single.

Angel Yepez (4-1) started for the Renegades and tossed five innings in the win, allowing a run off six hits while striking out four batters.

After pitching a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning, Renegades reliever Diego Castillo ran into trouble in the bottom of the ninth as Jackson hit a solo home run and first baseman Kevin Cornelius hit a RBI single to cut the Hudson Valley lead to 4-3. But with runners on first and second and no out, Castillo struck out the final three batters to pick up his third save of the season.

Yankees starter Luis Cedeno (4-3) took the loss as he allowed four runs and three earned runs in four and two-thirds innings pitched.

Notes: Jake Cronenworth continued his hot hitting on Thursday evening as he went three-for-five with two runs scored and a RBI. In his last six games played dating back to July 31st, Cronenworth is hitting .476 (10-21) with five runs scored and two RBI. He also has stolen four bases during that stretch as well.

Hudson Valley returns to Dutchess Stadium on Friday, August 7th as the Renegades host Staten Island at 7:05pm.
