Staten Island Yankees News Release
The Hudson Valley Renegades (22-23) defeated the Staten Island Yankees (23-21) by the score of 4-3 on Thursday night.
The Renegades struck first in the top of the first inning. Jake Cronenworth started off the game with a single, advanced to second after Michael Russell walked, and scored when Cade Gotta singled to right field. After Manny Sanchez was hit by a pitch, Hector Montes brought Russell home with a sacrifice fly to right field to give the Renegades an immediate two-run lead.
For the second inning in a row, the Renegades would put two runs on the board. Jose Paez walked to start the top of the second, stole his eight base of the season, and scored on Cronenworth's second single of the night. Cronenworth moved to third base after Kyle Holder committed an error and scored the fourth run of the game on a Gotta sacrifice fly.
Three straight hits put the Yankees on the board in the bottom of the second. Jhalan Jackson reached on an infield single, Junior Valera moved him over to third base on a line-drive double to left field and Drew Bridges collected his 20th RBI of the season on a single to right.
The Yankees put together a two run-rally in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jhalan Jackson hit his fifth home run of the season to lead off inning. Valera reached base on an error, moved to second on a Bridges infield single, and scored on a Kevin Cornelius RBI-single to center. Renegades reliever Diego Castillo would then strike out the next three Yankees to halt the rally and give them a one-run victory.
Yankees starting pitcher Luis Cedeno (L, 4-3) did not have his best performance of the season on Thursday night. He went 4.2 innings issuing five hits, four runs (three earned), two walks, and striking out four. Travis Hissong relieved Cedeno and went 2.1 scoreless innings striking out three. Andre Del Bosque also struck out three batters in two innings of no-run ball.
The Yankees will travel to Hudson Valley Friday before returning on Saturday for Meet George R.R. Martin Night. The first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a free Staten Island Direwolves hat courtesy of Random House Publishing.
