
Extra Inning Thriller Goes Doubledays' Way

MORGANTOWN, WV - It took ten innings, but the Doubledays came away with an 8-5 victory to take the series two games to one. This is the first time Auburn has won a series against West Virginia and the fifth series in a row the 'Days have won.
The Black Bears wasted no time getting on the board. Kevin Kramer scored in the first on a bases loaded single off the bat of Daniel Arribas. The next inning in the second, Kevin Newman scored on an RBI double by Logan Hill and after two the Bears led 2-0.
The third through fifth innings went by quickly and quietly until West Virginia added its third run in the sixth. Albert Baur walked to lead off the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice third on an error, and then eventually scored on an RBI single from Casey Hughston.
After a scoreless seventh, the Doubledays finally got on the board in the seventh. Darryl Florentino led off with an infield single and moved to second on a bunt single by Victor Robles. Dalton Dulin then reached on a single and an error that allowed Florentino to score and put the Doubledays down 3-1. After Kelvin Gutierrez struck out, David Kerian walked to load the bases. Ian Sagdal stepped up next and hit a bases clearing triple to give Auburn a 4-3 lead. Sagdal then scored on an RBI single by Diomedes Eusebio. Halfway through the eighth, the Doubledays led 5-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Casey Hughston hit his first homer of the season to put the score at 5-4. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and runners on first and third, Albert Baur lined a double into right that bounced over the wall for a ground rule double that tied the game at 5-5. If the ball stayed in play, Daniel Arribas would've scored easily of first on a walk-off double. Sam Johns was on the hill for Auburn and struck out Maximo Rivera to send the game to extras.
Gutierrez led off the tenth with a single, but was out at second on Kerian's fielder's choice. Sagdal then struck out for the second out, but Erik VanMeetren and Jakson Reetz then both worked walked to load the bases with two outs. Randy Encarnacion, who had been 0-4 on the night, then dug in and hit a bases clearing double to give the Doubledays an 8-5 lead in the tenth.
Adam Boghosian came out of the bullpen in the bottom of the tenth and gave up a walk, but that was it as the Doubledays won 8-5.
The win put the Doubledays at 22-22 on the season and .500 for the first time since July 1st. Auburn now sits just 5.5 games back of Williamsport heading into a three-game series with the Crosscutters starting Thursday at 7:05 PM.
