Auburn Doubledays News Release
Tonight's Game: It's the series opener between the Auburn Doubledays and Williamsport Crosscutters and the first game at Falcon Park between the two teams. The Doubledays visited the Crosscutters July 1-3 and were swept. Taylor Hearn takes the mound for Auburn against Mitch Gueller for Williamsport.
Last Night's Game: Down 3-0 in the eighth, the Doubledays rallied and beat the Black Bears 8-5 in 10 innings. Auburn scored five runs in the eighth and then three in the 10th to take the game and series two games to one.
Five in a Row: The Doubledays have won two straight games, but overall five series in a row. The Doubledays have taken two of three from Vermont, Lowell, Aberdeen, Hudson Valley, and West Virginia in that order. Since 2010, the Doubledays had never won more than three series in a row until this current stretch.
Bullpen Domination: Auburn's 'pen has been dominant over the course of the season recording a 2.59 ERA (63 ER in 219.2 IP). The starting pitchers haven't been as fortunate recording a 5.35 ERA (103 ER in 173.2 IP). Also of note, the Doubledays have surrendered 104 runs in the first three innings combined (34, 33, and 37 in the first through third respectively). Those 105 runs account for 50% of the runs Auburn's pitching staff has given up this year (207 total).
Back at .500: With yesterday's win, the Doubledays are back at .500 for the first time since July 1st when Auburn was 6-6 after a 5-4 11-inning loss at Williamsport. That was also the last extra inning game for the Doubledays. Auburn is 2-1 in extra inning contests this season.
5.5 Back: The 5.5 games back the Doubledays sit in the division is the closest Auburn has been to first place since July 1st when after that same 5-4 11-inning loss at Williamsport, the Doubledays dropped to 5 games back of the Crosscutters.
Regressing to the Mean: When the Doubledays visited the Crosscutters on July 1st, Williamsport sat at 10-1 on the season. After the series sweep, the Crosscutters were 13-1 in 2015. But since that hot start, Williamsport hasn't been the same. Since the sweep, the Crosscutters are 15-16 overall while the Doubledays are 16-14.
Facing All the Righties: When Mitch Gueller starts for Williamsport tonight, he will be the 19th RHP starting pitcher the Doubledays have faced in a row. Over that span, the Doubledays are 10-8 (17-18 overall). The last lefty Auburn faced as a starting pitcher was back on July 18th against West Virginia at home. The streak is tentatively scheduled to end tomorrow as Williamsport's probable is the lefty Tyler Gilbert.
Ian Sagdal Succeeding at the Right Times: The Doubledays' infielder played in all three games of the West Virginia series. In those games, Sagdal went a combined 2- 11, but each of those hits came when the Doubledays badly needed it. In game two, Sagdal hit a solo homer in the sixth inning to give Auburn a 5-1 lead at the time. It was Sagdal's first professional homer. Last night after starting 0-3, Sagdal hit a bases clearing triple in the eighth to give Auburn it's first lead of the night at 4-2.
