Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays dropped the first game of the series to the Crosscutters 5-3 due to errors and a late comeback ending to quickly.
In the first inning, the Crosscutters took a lead they would never relinquish. With one out, Mark Laird singled before he was moved over to third by Josh Tobias' ground rule double. Jose Pujols stepped up next and knocked both of them in with an RBI single into center.
After the first, both offenses went silent. Taylor Hearn pitched well for Auburn despite taking the loss. His line was 5 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, and 3 K's. Of the 15 outs Hearn recorded, 10 came by groundout.
Mitch Gueller pitched very well for the Crosscutters en route to the victory. His line was 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 BB, and 6 K's. Over his six innings of work, the Doubledays hit the ball out of the infield only three times and it came on the three hits (all of which were singles). On top of that, only one runner reached third and three reached second over Gueller's six frames.
In the top of the sixth, Kevin Mooney took over for Hearn and the Crosscutters added insurance runs. Tobias doubled and Pujols tripled to start the inning. Pujols then came in to score on Jesus Posso's single to left and Williamsport took a 4-0 lead. An inning later in the seventh, the Crosscutters scored on two walks and two singles to take a 5-0 lead.
The Doubledays finally scored on the seventh. After Ian Sagdal and Edwin Lora struck out on six pitches to start the frame, the rally started. Darryl Florentino singled and Jorge Tillero doubled to put runners on second and third with two outs. Victor Robles stepped up to the plate next and drove in both with a single up the middle and the score became 5-2.
The final part of the comeback came in the eighth when Kelvin Gutierrez started with a single into right. After Rhett Wiseman struck out, David Kerian walked and Sagdal was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. Lora then hit an infield single to third to score Gutierrez. Melvin Rodriguez was up next and grounded into an inning ending double play to end the frame.
In the ninth, neither team mounted a serious threat as the Doubledays fell 5-3 in game one of the series. Game two is Friday night at 7:05 PM. Jefry Rodriguez (RHP, 2-4, 5.40 ERA) takes the ball for Auburn against Tyler Gilbert (LHP, 1-2, 1.64 ERA) for Williamsport.
