Bisons' Lose Late, 6-3, to Red Wings

April 24, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

For the majority of Sunday's game at Frontier Field, Mike Quade's decision to start a mostly left-handed Rochester lineup against Buffalo's southpaw starter, looked like a failed one. That is, until the Bisons' righties emerged from the bullpen.

The Red Wings scored six times off of the Herd's relievers, leading to a 6-3 victory.

Tied at one in the eighth, Rochester's Jorge Polanco and Reynaldo Rodriguez both singled on grounders through the right side of the infield to start the inning. Juan Centeno then tried to advance the runners with a bunt but Ryan Tepera thwarted the effort as he leapt off the mound, scooped up the ball, spun and fired to third for the out.

That, however, would be the lone highlight of Tepera's afternoon.

David Murphy smacked a liner into center to score Rodriguez as his feet-first slide was just quick enough to beat the throw home from Junior Lake. Three batters later, Wilfredo Tovar hit an infield single to third with the bases loaded which ended up plating two more, as David Adams' throw bounced and got away from first baseman Matt Dominguez.

The inning was blown wide open by a James Beresford triple into the left-field corner, which brought home both Darin Mastroianni and Tovar.

Both starters failed to factor into their respective decisions through no fault of their own.

Scott Diamond, for the second time in 10 days, kept the Rochester bats at bay. The Canuck chucked six innings of shutout ball, striking out four while allowing five hits.

Rochester lefty, Pat Dean, used 100 pitches to get through seven, allowing one run while striking out his first two Bisons of the season.

Buffalo scored its lone run off of Dean in the top of the fourth when Matt Dominguez doubled home Dominic Brown from first. The two-bag effort extended former Astro's hit streak to eight games.

The Wings tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh with a tally off of Ben Rowen. With the infield in, Tovar served a soft liner into center field, just past where shortstop Jio Mier would normally be standing, to score Adam Walker from second.

The Bisons made things interesting in the ninth. Jesus Montero's leadoff single was followed by a Dominguez walk. Then with two out, Adams brought both men home with a single of his own. Reliever J.R. Graham then snagged a comebacker off of the bat of Alexi Casilla to end the game.

BISONS NOTES:

Jesus Montero extended his hit streak to nine games...Drew Hutchison threw 5.2 innings to earn the win with the Blue Jays in his first start with the big-league club this season...The Bisons are now 7-7 on the road...After a day off on Monday, both teams will do it all over again with a three game set back in Buffalo starting Tuesday at 6:05 p.m.
