Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs swept the Scranton Wilkes/Barre RailRiders with a 7-4 win Sunday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs scored five runs in the first inning and never trailed in the series finale.
Syracuse (9-8) started things early in the bottom of the first against right-hander Tyler Cloyd. Trea Turner led off the inning by reaching on a throwing error from third baseman Rob Refsnyder, followed by back-to-back walks from Scott Sizemore and Kevin Keyes. Matt Skole then doubled into the right-field center gap, driving in both Turner and Sizemore. With two outs, Brendan Ryan hit a three-run home run down the left field line, driving in Keyes and Skole, handing Syracuse a 5-0 lead after the first frame.
Scranton Wilkes/Barre (8-9) was held scoreless through the first four innings. The Chiefs eventually jumped on top 6-0 in the bottom of the third. Two walks and a single loaded the bases with one out, with a Pedro Severino sacrifice fly bringing across Kevin Keyes.
The RailRiders first got on the board in the top of the fifth inning off southpaw Aaron Laffey. Back-to-back doubles from Jose Rosario and Lane Adams kicked off the inning. Rosario scored on the double from Adams. Jonathan Diaz later singled, moving Adams to third. A sacrifice fly from Donovan Solano brought in Adams, capping the inning. The Chiefs led 6-2 after five frames.
Laffey finished his afternoon tossing five innings, surrendering two runs on six hits. On the opposite side, Tyler Cloyd went four innings, allowing six runs on five hits with five strikeouts.
The bottom of the sixth saw Syracuse jump back on the board. Turner singled to right field, advancing to third on outs from Sizemore and Jason Martinson. Turner later scored on a line-drive double off the bat of Kevin Keyes, giving the Chiefs a 7-2 lead after six frames.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre did not go quietly though, racking up runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. A Donovan Solano double brought in Jose Rosario in the top of the seventh, with a Chris Parmelee single scoring Nick Swisher in the top of the eighth. Right-hander Nick Masset would close the door in the ninth, ending the game on a ground-ball double play from Donovan Solano - one of five double-play grounders turned by the Chiefs in the game.
The Chiefs are back in play for the first game of a two-game set at Pawtucket on Monday night. First pitch is set for 6:15, with Paolo Espino slated to get the ball for Syracuse.
