Gwinnett Stripers News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Columbus Clippers (9-8) used an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning and a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat the Gwinnett Braves (10-8) by a 2-0 score on Sunday afternoon at Huntington Park.
The loss, the fifth in a row for the G-Braves, moved them to 0-4 on the current eight-game road trip. It's the first time Gwinnett has been shut out by an opponent this season.
Gwinnett starting pitcher Mike Foltynewicz pitched well, but was the victim of a costly error in the bottom of the third. With Collin Cowgill on second and one out, Jesus Aguilar blooped a single into right field. Cowgill stopped at third, but G-Braves' right fielder Chase d'Arnaud misplayed the ball, allowing Cowgill to race home with the first run of the game.
While the G-Braves were struggling at the plate against Columbus starting pitcher Will Roberts and the bullpen, the Clippers tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth. With Kanekoa Texeira on the mound, a single and two walks loaded the bases with one out. Texeira walked Robbie Grossman to push across the second and final run.
Foltynewicz (L, 1-2) pitched 7.0 innings with four hits, one unearned run, four walks and seven strikeouts. Texeira went a third of an inning with one hit, one earned run, three walks and one strikeout. Brandon Cunniff recorded the final two outs of the eighth.
Roberts (W, 2-1) pitched 7.0 scoreless innings with three hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Tom Gorzelanny went a third of an inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Jeff Johnson (S, 1) worked 1.2 innings with one hit and two strikeouts.
For Gwinnett, Rio Ruiz was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Cowgill was 2-for-3 for the Clippers and scored both runs in the game.
The G-Braves and Clippers finish up the three-game series Monday night at Huntington Park. Right-hander Williams Perez (0-0 0.00) will make his first Gwinnett start, while the Clippers will start right-hander Mike Clevinger (1-0, 4.40). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM at 6:05 p.m.
