Rochester Red Wings News Release
James Beresford had three hits, including a two-run triple, to help the Red Wings to a 6-3 comeback win over the Buffalo Bisons Sunday afternoon at Frontier Field.
After an off day Monday, the Wings head to Buffalo for three games. The Red Wings return home to host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Yankees) April 29-May 1. Complete promotions details below....
Red Wings starter Pat Dean had a 3-1 record and a 0.62 ERA in his last four starts against Buffalo, and on Sunday Dean set down the first three Bisons hitters to open the game.
Former Red Wing Scott Diamond started for the Bisons, and got two quick outs in the bottom of the first inning. Jorge Polanco dropped a single over second base, and Reynaldo Rodriguez beat out an infield hit to give the Wings a two-out threat. Diamond teamed up with first baseman Matt Dominguez for a nice fielding play to retire Juan Centeno for the inning's third out.
The top of the second began with Jesus Montero extending his hitting streak to nine games with a double. But Dean was able to bounce back and strand Montero at third, after a nice play from Polanco to end the inning.
David Murphy blooped a ball into left field for a lead-off double for the Wings in their half of the second. The Wings were unable to capitalize as Diamond retired the next three Wings in order.
The Bisons broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning with an infield single from Domonic Brown followed by an RBI double from Matt Dominguez to make it 1-0. The double also extended the hitting streak of Dominguez to eight games. Dean was able to limit the damage to a single run as he struck out the next batter he faced, and then a lazy pop up to Rodriguez at first ended the inning.
Dean looked strong in both the fifth and sixth, only giving up one hit. He appeared to have settled back into the groove he was in before the run he surrendered in the fourth inning. Dean worked another strong inning in the top of the seventh setting the Bisons down in order, while notching his second strikeout of the day.
Diamond pitched six shutout innings, allowing five hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts. He threw 92 pitches, 59 for strikes and was relieved by Ben Rowan.
Adam Brett Walker led off the bottom of the seventh against Rowan by flaring a single down the right field line. Walker then put himself into scoring position by stealing second base, giving the Wings their first real scoring chance since the second inning. Walker moved to third when Darin Mastroianni grounded out to the right side, and Wilfredo Tovar delivered a hit over the drawn in infield to score Walker and tie the game at 1-1.
Brandon Kintzler opened the eighth inning on the mound for the Wings, after Dean had worked seven innings with just four hits, one earned run and one walk allowed. Dean threw 100 pitches, 66 for strikes.
The bottom of the eighth began with back-to-back singles from Polanco and Rodriguez off of Ryan Tepera, giving the Wings a prime scoring opportunity. Murphy was able to connect on a full count offering, driving in Rodriguez to give the Wings their first lead of the day at 2-1. The Wings had the bases loaded with two outs and a chance to add to the lead, and they did just that when Tovar's infield single brought in a run. A throwing error on the same play brought in another run, and the Wings led 4-1. When Beresford tripled to bring in two more, Tepera (0-1) was chased from the game trailing 6-1.
J.R. Graham worked the ninth for the Red Wings, and the Bisons made a comeback attempt of their own with a single and walk to open the frame. Graham struck out Junior Lake, got a groundball out, but a bloop single brought in a pair of runs to make it 6-3. Graham snagged a hard hit groundball by Alexi Casilla for the game's final out.
Polanco, Rodriguez, Murphy, and Tovar each had two hits as the Wings out-hit the Bisons 13-6. Kintzler picked up the win in relief, giving him a 3-0 record this season.
