April 24, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Although Moya hit two long balls in the game, the Hens ninth inning rally fell short against Charlotte on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field by a score of 5-4. Toledo is now 7-7 on the season.
LF Steven Moya led the Hens on Sunday with two home runs, one in the fourth and one in the sixth, with the sixth-inning long ball also scoring McGehee. Moya is now hitting .293 on the season for Toledo with four homers.
The Mud Hens threatened early on when they loaded the bases in the second inning through walks issued to DH Casey McGehee and 1B Jordany Valdepsin and a single off the bat of C Humberto Quintero. However, the Hens failed to score as 2B Corey Jones hit into a double play.
Charlotte looked to get on the board in the third inning, loading the bases with two hits and a walk. Following a wild pitch issued by Crotta that scored a run for Charlotte, he struck out the final batter, minimizing the damage. A three-run home run off the bat of CF Leury Garcia increased the Knights lead to four runs in the fourth inning. Charlotte notched their fifth run of the game in the sixth inning with an RBI single from SS Tim Anderson.
The Mud Hens began a rally in the bottom of the ninth when a double off the bat of Jones scored Moya. In a one-run ballgame, Charlotte closer Daniel Webb retired the remaining Hens batters.
In his second start of the season for Toledo, Buck Farmer (2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO) went two scoreless innings with a total of 39 pitches. Farmer is currently working through the process of stretching out as a starter.
In relief for Toledo, RHP Michael Crotta tossed 1.1 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits. Dustin Molleken looked strong in relief for Toledo, striking out six Charlotte batters in 2.1 innings pitched. His ERA is now at 4.50 for 2016. Lefty Drake Britton took over on the mound for Toledo and notched the final out in the sixth inning, as well as the seventh and eighth. He did not allow a hit in 2.1 innings pitched. Preston Guilmet tossed the ninth inning for the Hens.
The home team struck out a total of thirteen Knights hitters throughout the game, while the Hens notched only seven hits on the day.
Toledo continues their home stand on Monday evening as they finish out their series with the Charlotte Knights at 6:35 p.m.
