Kevan Smith Promoted to Chicago, Rottino Activated

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Catcher Kevan Smith, who is hitting .345 (10-for-29) with two home runs and six RBIs over nine games this season with the Charlotte Knights, has been recalled by the Chicago White Sox today. Smith will take the Chicago roster spot of catcher Alex Avila, who was placed on the team's disabled list today. Taking Smith's place on Charlotte's active roster will be catcher Vinny Rottino, who was activated off the team's disabled list. Charlotte's roster is now set at 25 active players.

Smith is the second player this season to go from Charlotte to Chicago. RHP Erik Johnson was recalled by the club on April 19.

The 2016 season is Smith's second with the Knights. Last year, the 27-year-old backstop hit .260 with six home runs and 36 RBIs in 97 games. A member of Chicago's 40-man roster, Smith hit .290 with 10 home runs and 48 RBIs with Double-A Birmingham in 2014. He hit a season-high 12 home runs in 2013 with Winston-Salem (High-A). Originally selected by the Chicago White Sox in the seventh round of the 2011 draft out of Pittsburgh, PA, Smith is a product of the University of Pittsburgh.

Rottino, 36, was signed by the Chicago White Sox as a free agent on January 25, 2016. The Racine, WI native is a career .292 hitter over 11 minor league seasons. He was originally signed by the Milwaukee Brewers as an amateur free agent in 2003.

The Charlotte Knights continue their three-game series from Toledo, OH today at 2:05 p.m. against the Toledo Mud Hens (Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers) from Fifth Third Field. RHP Terance Marin (0-2, 12.38) will get the start for the Knights against Toledo RHP Buck Farmer (0-0, 3.00).
