Bisons Fall to Knights in Series Opener, 10-4

The Bisons were defeated by the Knights on Friday night as Charlotte used a six-run fifth inning to claim the victory in Buffalo, 10-4.

Herd starter Deck McGuire was rolling through the Charlotte lineup--picking up five strikeouts in the first four innings--but got into a jam in the fifth by allowing the first three batters to reach base. Eddy Alvarez's sacrifice fly brought in the first run of the inning and a wild pitch brought Patrick Leonard home from third for the second run. McGuire exited the game after these runs were scored.

The third run came across when Mason Robbins hit a sharp ball that grazed off Tim Lopes' glove at second. The ball ricocheted into the outfield and scored Casey Gillaspie. Later in the frame, Alex Presley's three-run home run padded the Charlotte lead to four runs.

Charlotte then scored two runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings to move the score to 10-4, effectively putting the game out of reach for the Bisons.

Buffalo originally broke the 0-0 deadlock, collecting two runs in the fourth.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. reached base to lead off the inning after a fielding error by Alvarez playing shortstop. Darnell Sweeney pinch ran for Gurriel Jr., who left the game after he appeared to tweak his leg running to first base on the play.

Anthony Alford followed by ripping a double down the third base line to put runners on second and third. Then, Reese McGuire's fly out plated Sweeney, who tagged home on the sacrifice fly. Ian Parmley's single that deflected off Knights' starter Donny Roach scored Alford from third to give the Bisons a 2-0 advantage.

In the seventh, the Herd chipped away at the lead thanks to a two-RBI single by Danny Jansen, but those runs weren't enough to best the Knights.

Roemon Fields and Alford had productive games at the plate for Buffalo. Fields had his second multi-hit game in as many days going 3-4. Alford went 2-5 picking up a double in the fourth and a single in the sixth.
