Syracuse, NY - On a beautiful Friday night at NBT Bank Stadium, the Syracuse Chiefs used timely offense to beat the Columbus Clippers, 5-2. Syracuse, the best hitting team in the International League with runners in scoring position, went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position on Friday, and Tuffy Gosewisch picked up two hits, including a two-run home that helped propel the Chiefs to the win.
Syracuse (26-26) put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Irving Falu and José Marmolejos both singled, putting runners on first and second base. Moisés Sierra then grounded into a fielder's choice where Marmolejos was out at second, but Falu moved to third and Sierra was safe at first. Jacob Wilson followed with a double that brought home Falu for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. Yadiel Hernandez then grounded a ball to the left side of the infield that Columbus shortstop Yu Chang misplayed for an error that scored Sierra from third to give Syracuse a 2-0 advantage.
Columbus (24-28) scored its only runs of the game in the top of the fourth. With two outs, Chang singled. Francisco Mejia followed with a line-drive home run over the left field wall that tied the game, 2-2.
The Chiefs regained the lead in the fifth. Gosewisch doubled, Hunter Jones singled, and Jaff Decker was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Falu then grounded into a fielder's choice in which Gosewisch was out at home for the first out of the inning, but everyone else was safe to keep the bases loaded. Marmolejos followed with a single to left field, scoring Jones from third to put the Chiefs back in front, 3-2.
Syracuse added to its lead in the sixth. With one out, Hernandez singled. Two batters later, Gosewisch crushed a ball over the left-field wall for a two-run homer that extended the Syracuse lead to three, 5-2.
Chiefs starting pitcher Tommy Milone posted a quality start. The left-hander struck out eight batters in six innings on the mound while allowing only one walk, five hits, and two runs. Syracuse relievers John Simms, Christopher Smith, and Jimmy Cordero each threw one scoreless inning. Smith and Cordero both struck out two batters.
Syracuse and Columbus play the second game their three-game series on Saturday night. RHP Erick Fedde will be on the mound for the Chiefs with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
