Pigs Fall to Toledo in Series Opener
June 1, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The IronPigs dropped the first game of a three-game set vs the Toledo Mud Hens 4-2 Friday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Enyel De Los Santos (5-3) worked quickly through seven innings for Lehigh Valley, but a couple of pitches came back to burn him at the end of the night. A leadoff home run from Edwin Espinal in the third inning, and eventually another from Mike Gerber in the sixth lead the way for Toledo, while Dawel Lugo added a leadoff triple in the fourth inning and scored a pitch later on a Christin Stewart single. Grayson Greiner put the game out of reach with an RBI single in the top off the ninth to score Jim Adduci.
Kyle Dowdy (2-1) was a late addition for Toledo on the mound, but rose through the adversity. Lehigh Valley only earned one base hit through six innings against the right-hander. Dean Anna managed a one-out double in the fourth inning, but was stranded at third base. When Dowdy was lifted for Zac Huston in the seventh inning, the Pigs were finally able to strike. Colin Cowgill smacked a solo home run to left field with two outs to open the scoring for Lehigh Valley. The Pigs brought it a bit closer in the eighth inning thanks to consecutive doubles from Adron Chambers and Anna.
Anna had another productive day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI, while Chambers added a double and a run scored for the Pigs.
The Pigs will continue their series with Toledo tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at Coca-Cola Park. Tom Eshelman will take the mound for Lehigh Valley. Fans on Saturday will also be treated to bacon-themed fireworks following the game.
