Louisville Bats News Release
BATS WELCOME STRIPERS FOR THE FIRST TIME: The Louisville Bats welcome the Gwinnett Stripers, formerly the 'Gwinnett Braves', to Louisville Slugger Field for the first time since being renamed in the offseason. Last night, the Bats avoided being swept by the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders with a 5-4 win in 11 innings. Louisville will look to win its third series of the season, last winning a series against the Charlotte Knights from April 23-25.
AGAINST GWINNETT: Louisville and Gwinnett traded home sweeps last season, with the Bats sweeping the G-Braves in 3 games at Louisville Slugger Field from May 30-June 1, and Gwinnett sweeping LOU 4-0 in Lawrenceville from August 10-13. The Bats' sweep of the G-Braves was the only series sweep for Louisville last season, outscoring them 15-9 in the home series. LOU last won the overall season series against GWN in 2016, going 4-3.
SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE: Louisville trailed early on 1-0 and 2-1, before taking a 4-2 lead with a 3-run bottom of the sixth inning. A two-run double off the bat of Nick Senzel scored Hernan Iribarren and Dilson Herrera , who opened the inning with back-to-back hits. Senzel would come in to score on a Mason Williams RBI single. The Bats earned their ninth come-from-behind victory this season, meaning they now have as many comeback wins as they do wins when scoring first in a game (9-15, .375), ranking last in the IL in the latter scenario.
LONGEST GAME OF THE SEASON: The Bats played in their longest game of the season by both time of game (3 hours, 44 minutes) and innings (11) in last night's 5-4 win. It was Louisville's longest game by both time and innings since August 17 last season vs. Pawtucket, with that game going 14 innings in 4 hours, 26 minutes, concluding an hour-long rain delay. The Bats won that game, 6-5.
TRA-HAN DYNASTY: Louisville shortstop Blake Trahan not only provided a key defensive play to end the top of the eighth, but also provided the walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Bats their third walk-off victory of 2018.
GLAD TO NOT MAKE HISTORY: With last night's win, the Bats finished the month of May with an 8-22 record. The 22 losses are tied for the most Louisville's ever had in a calendar month, done three total times and last done by the 1993 Redbirds in August prior to this season.
HOME GAME #30: The Bats have played in 29 games at Louisville Slugger Field this season, tied for most home games in the IL with Durham. The Bats have pitched much better at home, averaging 4.2 runs given up per game at home, and 5.2 runs given up per game on the road, with a 3.59 ERA at home and 4.91 ERA on the road. The offense has been fairly even, averaging 3.4 runs at LSF and 3.6 runs on the road, with the batting averages sitting at .248 and .241, respectively.
6 BB YESTERDAY: Louisville pitching combined to walk 6 RailRiders in last night's win, matching the total amount of walks by the staff over the team's previous 7 games. Robert Stephenson (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K) tossed his team-leading fifth quality start of the season, but could not become the first Bats pitcher to win 4 consecutive starts since Jon Moscot won 5 straight in 2015.
SERIES OPENERS: The Bats own a 5-10 record in series openers this season, having lost their last 3 in a row after winning 3 of their previous 4. LOU is 3-6 in series openers at Louisville Slugger Field this season.
ONE AWAY FROM 400: Hernan Iribarren recorded his 399th hit in a Louisville uniform Thursday. He is now one hit shy of becoming just the sixth player in Louisville franchise history to reach the 400-hit plateau. Next on the list is Louisville Bats legend Corky Miller, who's currently in 5th place on the all-time list with 416 hits. Aaron Holbert, who played for Louisville when it was both the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals (1995-97) and Cincinnati Reds (2004-06) holds the franchise record with 471 hits in a Louisville uniform.
